WHY IS A HAIR CARE ROUTINE IMPORTANT?

Maintaining a good hair care routine for your hairs is as important as following a skin care routine as it helps keeping your hair soft, healthy, free of infections and greasiness, frizz-free, full of life and other conditions. How often should you wash your hair depends on your scalp type and your hair texture.

HOW TO KNOW YOUR HAIR TYPE?

There are four basic hair types

1. STRAIGHT HAIR

Straight hair does not curl easily and easily falls flat from the roots to the ends.  It is normally soft and silky but mostly looks less voluminous. Women with this hair type mostly have oily scalps that cause the hair to get greasy more frequently.

2. WAVY HAIR

This hair type resides between straight and curly hair. In this hair type soft, big curls are there as it progresses from the roots to the ends. This hair type is mostly rough in texture. This hair type tends to hold hairstyles well. So, if you want to straighten, curl or style your hair in anyway, this hair type is the most eligible and the easiest to experiment with.

3. CURLY HAIR

This hair type is determined by prominent and small curls from the roots down to the ends. Curly hair tends to be extremely dry and frizzy as compared to the other two hair types.

Curly Hair is further classified Into:

  • Type 3A (loose curls)
  • Type 3B (medium curls)
  • Type 3C (tight curls)

4. COILY HAIR

This hair type is also known as “African American” hair, this hair type mostly have very tight curls and is actually quite fragile. It tends to break off easily if proper care is not taken.

Coily Hair is further classified Into:

  • Type 4A (soft)
  • Type 4B (wiry)
  • Type 4C (extremely wiry)

FACTORS WHICH DETERMINE HOW OFTEN YOU SHOULD WASH YOUR HAIR:

Washing your hair everyday is not at all suggested. Washing hair everyday with shampoo remove the essential oils and moisture from your hair which your hair needs to keep itself hydrated. It is rather recommended to wash your hair once, twice or thrice a week that too depending on your hair or scalp problems. So here are some of the factors which determine how often you should wash you hair.

1. GREASINESS

Straight or oily hair tends to attract dirt and pollution more which can result in clogging of pores and the development of other scalp problems like dandruff or flaking. Many factors like your age, genes, lifestyle, hormonal changes etc determine how oily your scalp is. So in such conditions you need to wash your hair twice a week and even thrice a week if your scalp is extra oily due to any other condition.

2. HAIR TYPE

Your hair type is also responsible for how often you should wash your hair. The more straight your hair is, the more your hair will get dirt and grease. Fine, straight hair needs to be washed more frequently as compared to wavy or curly hair.

3. DUST

It you stay and work outdoors most of the time then you need to wash your hair more often then usual like for thrice a week since your scalp and hair is exposed to more dust and pollution.

4. LIFESTYLE

If you are somebody who loves to travel and travels a lot or exercises regularly, then your scalp becomes more sweaty and greasy and you need to wash your hair in every two or three days intervals.

BASIC HAIR CARE ROUTINE FOR ALL HAIR TYPES:

1. REGULAR OILING

Oiling is something that most of us hate but massaging your hair with oil regularly keeps your scalp nourished and hydrated and also makes your hair frizz free. Well, it is recommended that people with straight and wavy hair should oil their hair once a week while people curly and coily hair should oil their hair twice a week. It is advisable to wash your hair 2 to 8 hours after oiling. For oiling you should take a carrier oil like castor oil, olive oil, argan oil or coconut oil. Mix an essential oil of your choice according to your hair need in the carrier oil. Then warm the oil. Gently massage the oil for 5 to 10 minutes on your scalp.

Pro tip: Never pull your hair while massaging as it makes your hair more prone to breakage leading to more hair loss.

2. RINSE YOUR HAIR WITH A MILD SHAMPOO:

After oiling, wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Always prefer to use paraben and sulphate free shampoo as less chemicals on your scalp reduces less infections. Never apply shampoo directly on your scalp. Always dilute the shampoo in some water then apply on your scalp. It will reduce the harsh chemicals on your scalp and will reduce scalp infections.

Pro tip: Never scratch your scalp while shampooing as it tends to more breakage of hair. Instead run your fingers gently through the scalp and from roots to end along the hair length to clean your scalp and hair.

3. CONDITION YOUR HAIR:

After shampooing your hair, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove all the soap and dirt from your scalp and hair. Then dry your hair with a towel. Apply a mild conditioner along the hair length to condition your hair.

Pro tip: Always apply conditioner on damp hair as conditioner works best in damp hair because in wet hair all the conditioner is removed. Never apply conditioner on the scalp. Use conditioner only along the length of the hair.

4. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR:

After applying conditioner, rinse your hair again. Then dry your hair off with a towel. Now it’s time for the final rinse which is the apple cider vinegar rinse. Mix half cup of apple cider vinegar in 2 cups of water and mix it. Then wash your hair and scalp with apple cider vinegar. As it is acidic in nature so it balances the pH level of your scalp and it helps keeping your scalp free from dandruff and other scalp infections. Adds a shine to your hair and reduces hair fall. After rinsing wait for 5 to 7 minutes then dry your hair with towel.

Pro tip: Never apply apple cider vinegar directly to your scalp as it can cause a burning sensation on your scalp. Do not rinse your hair again after apple cider vinegar rinse. While drying your hair never twist the towel or your hair or never run the towel through your hair vigorously as it causes friction in your hair which makes your hair more prone to breakage. Always dry your hair gently by pressing your hair along the length.

5. APPLY SERUM:

After drying your hair apply serum to your hair from roots to end to keep your hair moisturized and nourished. It will add shine to hair, make your hair  soft and smooth and will keep your hair nourished. It will also help in keeping your hair frizz free.

6. LET YOUR HAIR DRY NATURALLY:

Always prefer to let your hair air dry. Reduce the use of dryers or any heating appliances on your hair as it makes your hair frizzy which makes your hair more prone to breakage. By air drying, your hair dries naturally which reduces stress on your hair and makes your hair more voluminous, healthy, soft and smooth. When your hair dries naturally then your hair do not get frizzy and hence promotes your hair health.

7. APPLY HAIR PACKS:

Applying hair packs once a week pampers your scalp which reduces the stress on your scalp. It helps removing dirt and grease from your scalp, promotes hair growth and reduces hair fall.
