8 Proven steps to deal with Failure

Every failure teaches a valuable lesson which is often viewed as virtually a necessity for both career and character growth. Failure is rather a logical step towards success. Generally, people tend to cover up their mistakes or turn the table onto someone else’s shoulder whenever they meet with failure. Instead, it might be worth satisfying their mistakes head-on, signalize to them so as to seek out some effective means of injury control, and learn a valuable lesson that will be applied during a future similar situation.

How an individual deal with failure depends to an outsized extent on his ego resilience whether his sense of self-worth bounces back after defeat or is it crushed. Some people have a really large ego which is impermeable. They either don't admit an error ever occurred or cover it up whenever possible. They thus never learn any lesson from their failure and are doomed to repeat their mistakes again and again. It’s because they never accept their mistakes in the first place.

Some other people, who have the highest ego resilience, not only learn from their setbacks but also find a measure of confidence in themselves from the way during which they affect those setbacks. Their pride is tempered enough to admit to an error and hence they're less likely than others to get broken by a defeat. They take steps to rectify a nasty situation as early as possible instead of making a stubborn plan to avoid face loss.

But what is important to rise in life is to face your mistakes and deal with your failure.

So here are some tips on "How to deal with your failure?"

TIPS TO DEAL WITH FAILURE:

1. EMBRACE YOUR FEELINGS:

Failure doesn’t come alone, it is accompanied by a variety of feelings like embarrassment, face loss, anxiety, anger, sadness, and even shame for a few. Those feelings can be uncomfortable and many people will do anything possible to escape that emotional discomfort. But rather than escaping go ahead in embracing your feelings. Acknowledge how you are feeling emotionally and let yourself feel bad for your failure. Label your emotions with your mistakes and allow yourself to experience them so that you can learn a lesson from those failures and never repeat them again.

2. DON’T REDUCE YOUR PAIN IN UNHEALTHY MANNER:

While facing failures, people attempt to say things like " I didn’t actually want that job" or " I was not interested in doing that job" but minimizing your pain in such an unhealthy manner won’t make it go anyway. Distracting yourself from your pain by taking drugs or alcohol won’t help heal your pain either. Those things will only provide you with some temporary distraction and relief. Identify the unhealthy ways you try to avoid or minimize the pain of failure in your life. Trying to getting rid of pain in such an unhealthy manner will do more harm than good and will only turn your situation worse.

3. ADOPT HEALTHY COPING SKILLS:

Taking to a friend or practicing meditation and deep breathing, taking a warm bubble bath or going for a walk, or spending time with your pet are few options you can do to practice healthy coping skills. Not every coping skill is meant to work for everyone but it’s important to find some coping skills that work best for you. If you are battling with bad habits when you are stressed out like smoking or drinking or eating junk food. Then create a list of healthy coping skills that work for you best and hang it in a prominent place where you can keep notice of it. Then use that list to remind yourself of the healthier strategies you made for yourself whenever you are feeling bad or low due to your failures.

4. AVOID NEGATIVE BELIEFS ABOUT FAILURES:

You may have given way to some illogically negative beliefs about failure at some point in your life. Perhaps you may think that failure means you are bad or you are good for nothing or that you will never get success or maybe you think no one would like you if you fail. Those types of beliefs are illogical and they can prevent you from doing better things which you might learn from your failures.

5. GIVE WAY TO PRACTICAL THOUGHTS ABOUT FAILURE:

Whenever you find yourself struck in thoughts that you’re a hopeless person or that there is no use of trying again then refresh yourself and frame your thoughts again. Remember yourself of practical and realistic thoughts about failure like:

  • Failure is a sign that I am challenging myself to do something more difficult
  • I can handle failure.
  • I can learn from my failures.

You need to repeat the phrases or affirmations to yourself, again and again, to clear off the negative thoughts or to force yourself to bounce back.

6. BE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH:

It’s very important to reach an accurate level of responsibility for your failures. Taking too much responsibility on your shoulder can cause you to blame yourself unnecessarily. On the other hand, blaming other people or unfortunate circumstances for your failures will never let you learn from your failures. When you think about your mistakes and failure, look for reasons and explanations, not lame excuses. Recognize the reasons behind your failure and acknowledge what you can do better to not repeat the mistake next time.

7. OPEN YOURSELF TO LEARNING:

Failures can be the best teachers only if you have an open attitude towards learning. Why did you make a mistake? Or Why did you make a series of mistakes? Think about what has gone wrong that lead to your failure, analyze your mistakes, and acknowledge what you could do differently to avoid the mistake for the next time. Then it will help you make sure that your failure must teach you a life lesson that would help you learn something new for life.

8. FACE YOUR FEARS OF FAILING:

If you have spent most of your life escaping or running away from your failures, then it will really make you feel scared for when it would finally happen. Facing your fears of failure can be the key to reducing your stress and discomfort. Practice stepping out of your comfort zone. Do things that challenge you and you might get rejected in doing that or try new things where you have chances to fail. Then over a course of time, you will learn that failure is not as bad as you have always imagined. Infant it is the best teacher of your life.
