Food is the basic human necessity to stay alive. Also it is the basic need of every living organism for survival. Therefore it is important to realize that we should not waste food. Our world consists of diverse types of cultures. These cultures have varieties of cuisines and dishes of food in them. Thus all the cuisines have different taste. Furthermore, our nature also provides us with a huge variety of foods. From fruits to vegetables, from Dairy food to seafood everything is made available to us by nature. Different countries have their own specialties of cuisines.

We can’t ignore the importance of food in our life as it is the basic need for every organism to survive but it is equally important to be aware about what we are eating. Most of us focus on how the food tastes or looks, but what we don’t bother to pay attention to is the fun facts associated with the food we eat. So today I am going to share some unknown food facts that will leave you awestruck and you will go food.

1. SHREDDED CHEESE CONTAIN CELLULOSE:

You will get insane to know that many shredded cheese and cereals contain cellulose that’s wood pulp. Cellulose which is actually a sawdust is used in various shredded cheese and cereals to prevent them from clumping.

2. GREEN, RED AND YELLOW BELL PEPPERS ARE NOT SAME:

It is quite amusing to know that all the types of bell peppers are not the same type. Some green bell peppers can ripe and turn into red bell peppers but that doesn’t mean that all green, red or yellow bell peppers come from the same plant. They all come from unique plants with their own seeds.

3. RANCH DRESSING AND COFFEE CREAMER MAY CONTAIN TITANIUM DIOXIDE:

Titanium dioxide is a food additive used in ranch dressing, icing, coffee creamer and powdered sugar. It is basically used to make whites appear whiter. However it is crazy to know that the same food additive that’s titanium dioxide is even used in paints, detergents and sunscreen.

4. PEANUT BUTTER CAN TURN INTO DIAMONDS:

Scientists at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut in Germany have discovered that as peanut butter is highly rich in carbon, it is possible to turn peanut butter into diamonds. All we need to do is to extract the oxygen from the carbon dioxide present in the peanut butter and then under immense pressure extract the carbon left behind.

5. POPSICLE WAS INVENTED ACCIDENTALLY:

Even though no exact studies and researches have been found, but the origin of the story is debated, according to NPR, in 1905 an eleven year old boy called Frank Epperson accidentally left a cup containing a mixture of soda and water outside overnight. Next day the mixture froze and he enjoyed his newfound treat.

6. APPLE PIE IS NOT AMERICAN:

While most of us believe that "An American as apple pie" but it isn’t actually American. Pies were basically invented in Medieval England while the modern recipe for apple pie with a lattice crust was created and modified by the Dutch. 

7. POTATOES CAN ABSORB AND REFLECT WI-FI SIGNALS:

When Boeing wanted to examine and detect its wireless signals in its new planes in the year 2012, then they placed huge piles of potatoes on the seats. Because of great water content and chemical makeup in the potatoes, potatoes absorb and reflect radio and wireless signals just the way humans do.

8. RAW OYSTERS ARE ALIVE WHEN YOU EAT THEM:

There are chances that raw oysters are still alive when you eat them. Oysters deteriorate so quick that it has to be served very quickly at the time when they are still alive. It is because when oysters die, they are no longer considered safe to eat. So next time while eating oysters, keep in mind that you are taking live oysters in your mouth. But fortunately, oysters don’t have a central nervous system, they can’t feel pain.

9. BANANAS ARE BERRIES WHILE STRAWBERRIES ARE NOT:

Bananas along with cucumbers and kiwis are actually classified under berries while strawberries, blueberries or raspberries which are often called as berries are not actually classified under berries. To be considered classified as a berry, the fruit should come from one flower with one ovary typically having several seeds as explained by Stanford Magazine. Raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries are not classified under berries because they come from a single flower with more than one ovary.

10. CARROTS WERE ORIGINALLY PURPLE IN COLOUR:

According to the National Carrot Museum in the UK, the initial carrots were not like what we see it today. Originally carrots were purple or white in colour with a thin root. The orange carrots what we see and eat today are actually the result of a genetic mutation occurred in the late 16th century that changed the original colour of the carrots.

11. GRAPES WILL EXPLODE IN A MICROWAVE:

There is an insane science experiment. If we split a grape in two halves and put it in a microwave, it can explode into a fireball of plasma and lightening. Scientists have explained that microwave generate heat by using microwave radiations. If you heat nothing in the microwave or a very small grape of negligible size that is unable to absorb enough power, then the electromagnetic waves have nothing to do and become concentrated in one place. The grape then acts like as an antenna and conducts electricity in the microwave causing explosions of small plasma fireballs 

12. CUCUMBERS ARE ACTUALLY WATER:

You will be astonished to know that cucumbers are mostly water. So next time if you feel thirsty or dehydrated but don’t want want to drink water, then cucumber is perfect yes in such cases. You can have a bowl full of cucumbers to keep yourself hydrated as cucumbers are 96% water.

13. ALMONDS ARE NOT NUTS:

We all always thought almonds to be nuts but actually almonds are seeds. According to the Plant Information Center, nuts are defined as one-seeded, dry, indehiscent fruit with a hard pericarp, usually derived from a one-loculed ovary but an almond is actually classified as a drupe. The Plant Information Center defines a drupe as a fleshy fruit with a stony endocarp. So next time don’t consider almonds as nuts.

14. GELATIN IS NOT ACTUALLY VEGETARIAN:

Products having gelatin in them are actually not considered as vegetarian or vegan-friendly because gelatin is prepared by boiling skin, cartilage, and bones of animals such as pigs, cows, and chickens. So if you are pure vegetarian, then think twice before having gelatin products.

15. WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE ICE- CREAM COSTS $350:

World’s most expensive ice cream sundae is found at Serendipity 3 in New York City. The sundae is made with Tahitian vanilla cream with 23-karat gold leaf, almonds, caviar, and a sugar-encrusted orchid. It takes eight hours to prepare this ice-cream sundae and comes in a $350 Baccarat crystal goblet and an 18-karat gold spoon.
